RESEARCH IN THE ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

 

Research in the arts and social sciences in topics with a connection to Greenland takes place both in Greenland and in a number of research environments in Denmark.

 

In Greenland, research in the arts and social sciences primarily takes place at the University of Greenland, Ilisimatusarfik. Furthermore research activities are organised by MIPI, a centre for knowledge on children and young people in Greenland, and by the national museum and archives of Greenland (Nunatta Katersugaasivia Allagaateqarfialu) as well as by Groenlandica.

The department for education (Inerisaavik) is to do research in and develop the primary school of Greenland.

Greenland National Museum and Archives

Greenland National Museum and Archives do research in cultural history. The archaeological research takes topics within all periods of the pre-history of Greenland as its starting point. The ethnological research is focused on traditional Greenlandic costumes and various aspects of immaterial culture while historical research is concentrated on the colonial era.

 

The national museum is responsible for cultural historical preservation and offers advice and consultancy for a number of businesses in the raw materials and energy sector.

The Section for Eskimology and Arctic Studies

The Section for Eskimology and Arctic Studies at the Institute for Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies at the University of Copenhagen carries out teaching and research in linguistic, cultural and social science topics. The research is geographically focused on the Inuit in Greenland, Canada, Alaska, and Siberia with the main emphasis on Greenland. Greenlandic as a foreign language is taught at the institute.

Centre for Research in Greenland

SILA was established as a research centre at the national museum in Copenhagen in 1999. Since 2009, the centre has been called SILA – Arctic Centre at the Ethnographic Collection. The research has a focus on Arctic archaeology and early history. The centre has a close co-operation with Greenland National Museum and Archives.
